I watched Apocalypse Now Redux again this past weekend and a couple of choice bits of dialogue jumped out at me as being particularly relevant today.
What I watched: Kurtz to Willard – “You’re an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill.”
What I imagined: Timmeh (in a rare candid moment) to mirror – “You’re an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill.”
The one that really sent shivers down my spine though was this piece from Kurtz’s speech to Willard – “You have to have men who are moral, and at the same time, who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling, without passion. Without judgment. Without Judgment. Because it’s judgment that defeats us.”
I can see the utility of this, a counterbalance to the traitorous swine whose true constituency is the amoral men that have raped and pillaged this country via ghost-written laws and their lobbyist proxies. To be sure, I am not advocating or implying violence here, merely discussing a kind of utility to counter the almost unfathomable corrupting influence of the ocean of money and power that is Washington D.C. It is a fearsome and dangerous utility second only to open civil war.
Borrowing from Benjamin Franklin, we have a Republic, if we can keep it. It may already be too late. But if we do not dramatically change the character and composition of the United States Congress beginning with this election, it most certainly is too late. As long as Americans think in terms of left/right, red/blue, liberal/conservative then just like “/” symbol indicates, we will remain divided and subjugated. In which case, prepare to suffer the wrath of our collective complacency.
Kurtz – “The horror…the horror.”
WAKE. THE. FUCK. UP.
UPDATE: I forgot I wanted to add something from a post on ClubOrlov regarding the spy swap with Russia:
The bulk of comments submitted for [the US Swaps Russian Spies for…Russian Spies] post attest to two salient facts:
1. Many Americans have a knee-jerk hatred of Russia—not surprising, since this is what American mass media has been trying to instill in many generations of them. Loyal Americans establish their loyalty by bad-mouthing people in other countries. Since this is largely a display of ignorance, it is not even threatening—just pathetic.
2. More interestingly, many Americans no longer even understand the concepts of loyalty and treason—again, not surprising, since for a few generations now they have been ruled by traitors, whose routine acts of betrayal are designed to benefit just about anyone—from Israeli arms smugglers to Afghani heroin dealers—except the people who supposedly elect them to office.
There’s a sign post up ahead – “Highway to Hell”.
